- Title– It’s Time To Curse Some Trees
II.Text: Mark 11:12-14; 20-22 (NKJV)
III. Introduction:
This particular account of Jesus and the fig tree is an interesting tale. It has correlating accounts in Matt. And Luke. In this telling by Mark, or John Mark as he is also known, we see Jesus being presented as servant. In the accounting in Matthew, Jesus is presented as King. Luke gives an slightly different picture with Jesus telling a parable of the fig tree.
Significance of FIGS: O.T. : Figs were associated with prosperity and peace. A sign of God’s blessing and favor. Conversely, figs were also associated with divine judgement and consequences of unfaithfulness. The absence of figs signifies the withdrawal of God’s blessing and the onset of judgement due to the peoples disobedience. KEYWORD: HIS PEOPLE.
N.T. : Figs are used as a metaphor for spiritual bareness and impending judgement. This is a warning to Israel and the Church about the consequences of a failure to produce spiritual fruit.
